The son of an itinerant engineer, David Wayrynen spent his childhood living in five states across the U.S., as well as four countries on three other continents. This experience has influenced his life more than all of his formal education.
From the age of thirteen, Wayrynen participated in a three-year apprenticeship in stone carving under master sculptor Henri Chenceau. He then studied engineering, gaining a thorough knowledge of industrial materials and fabrication techniques.
After an award-winning, 15-year career in software design, periodically interrupted by successful expeditions into commercial photography, graphic design and filmmaking, Wayrynen returned his attention to sculpture, focusing on metal work, particularly with steel.
Wayrynen lives and works in Sonoma County in northern California.
